Technical Abstract: We recently developed a test for differentiating strains of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus (PRRSV). The test has great application in epizootiological studies to trace the origin of PRRSV involved in new outbreaks of the disease. By identifying the source, further spread of the virus can often be prevented. In some cases test results are urgently needed, however, they are sometimes delayed by the requirement to first isolate PRRSV from diagnostic samples (currently the first step in the test procedure). In the study reported here we investigated the possibility of avoiding virus isolation by applying the test directly to tissues collected from pigs affected by the disease. Preliminary work described in this report has indicated virus isolation is not always needed. Research is continuing to determine the relative reliability of applying the test directly to tissue samples versus applying the test only after virus isolation from the same samples.
