Title: Mycotoxin Productivity of Aspergillus Tamarii

Technical Abstract: Aspergillus tamarii Kita (= A. flavus group) is known to produce mycotoxins such as cyclopiazonic acid and kojic acid. Recently, we isolated several A. tamarii strains from Japanese tea fields and found one of the strains (No.19; MZ2; NRRL 25517) produced substantial quantities of aflatoxin B1 (30 ppm) and B2 (0.1 ppm) when grown in glucose-yeast extract liquid medium. This strain also produced cyclopiazonic acid (0.3 ppm) when grown in a modified Czapeks liquid medium. We also examined 22 strains of A. tamarii from the ARS Culture Collection (NRRL) for their ability to produce aflatoxins and cyclopiazonic acid. One of the strains (NRRL 443) produced aflatoxin B1 (3.8 ppm) and B2 (40 ppb) while 18 of the strains produced cyclopiazonic acid. In this paper we present the results of our survey of aflatoxin and cyclopiazonic acid production for these strains of A. tamarii and also examine distinguishing morphological characters.
