Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (APCI-MS), a soft ionization technique, has been used with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for qualitative and quantitative analysis of triglyceride-containing samples. HPLC with flame ionization detection (FID) has also been used for analysis. A synthetic mixture of triglycerides was analyzed. Response factors for each TG were calculated by direct comparison of the statistical composition to the raw LC/APCI-MS percent composition. The empirical response factors thus obtained provided a TG composition with the lowest relative error compared to the statistical composition. Results for analysis of corn oil samples using LC/APCI-MS and LC-FID were similar to those obtained for the synthetic mixture. The FA compositions calculated from the TG composition obtained using the empirical response factors and using the response factors calculated from the GC-FID data had the lowest relative errors. APCI-MS represents a powerful tool for qualitative and quantitative analysis. A simple and straightforward method of calculating response factors from the FA composition, determined by GC-FID, has been developed which provides good agreement to expected results in the absence of a standard which is similar in composition to the analyte.
