Technical Abstract: The last review of soybean Qualitative Genetics was for the Soybean Monograph (1987). There has never been a combined review of soybean genetics and molecular genetics. A group in Yugoslavia plans to publish a book entitled, Soybean Genetics. We were asked to prepare the chapter encompassing soybean qualitative genetics and molecular genetics. The focus was on genetics published since 1987. Our literature review describes and categorizes qualitative traits by phenotype. We discuss response to plant pathogens, nuclear and cytoplasm traits affecting chlorophyll, genes affecting fatty acid seed oil composition, genes affecting physiological traits, genes controlling isoenzymes and proteins, and genes causing sterility. The appropriate reference citations are included in the Tables. The molecular genetics component gives the history of molecular mapping of quantitative traits and relates the molecular linkage map to conventional genetic traits. The evolution of duplicated genes, either by polyploidization or segmental duplication is given. This chapter will benefit not only breeders and geneticists but other scientists who need an update of soybean qualitative and molecular genetics.
