Technical Abstract: A 39 kDa protein antigen from Pasteurella multocida was purified by column chromatography and SDS-PAGE. No serological differences were found between antigen purified from in vivo-grown and laboratory-grown P. multocida. When combined in a vaccine with aluminum hydroxide or Freund's incomplete adjuvant, the antigen protected adult turkeys against challenge with a heterologous serotype. Serums from the vaccinated turkeys were evaluated in immunoblots and passive immune protection studies in poults. The serums failed to passively immunize poults against heterologous serotype challenge. Monoclonal antibodies were raised against the antigen. The antibodies were specific and recognized the antigen in immunoblots.
