Technical Abstract: Sorbopyrus is an intergeneric hybrid between a pear (Pyrus) and a mountain ash (Sorbus). Sorbopyrus is represented in various arboreta and botanic gardens around the world, but has not been widely cultivated for its fruit. It is grown as a clone, and is not a wild species. The tree has a long history, having originated before 1620, and has come to be known by many names. This paper clarifies the name of this unusual tree, and describes some of its characteristics. The fruit tastes very good, and may have potential as a novelty crop for backyard growers.
