Sorbopyrus is represented in various arboreta and botanic gardens around the world, but has not been widely cultivated for its fruit. It is grown as a clone, and is not a wild species. The tree has a long history, having originated before 1620, and has come to be known nby many names. This paper clarifies the name of this unusual tree, and describes some of its characteristics.
