Technical Abstract: The application of analytical thioacidolysis to lignin will be briefly reviewed. Recent new applications and findings include the characterization of esterified components and the appearance of ether dimers in unoptimized thioacidolyses. A new approach to providing equivalent data to thioacidolysis will be introduced. This method is based on clean derivatization followed by reductive cleavage of ethers. It can be performed under quite mild conditions and has a number of advantages over thioacidolysis, not the least of which is the use of considerably less noxious and pungent reagents. The procedure and related applications should greatly add to the arsenal of techniques available for probing deeper into the lignin structure.
