Technical Abstract: This chapter, for a methods book on methods used to study invertebrate pathogens, is a relatively nontechnical treatment of methods to preserve cultures of fungi (and other microbes). Principles involved and protocols for using each of these diverse storage techniques are dicussed. The methods covered range from simple and inexpensive (continual tranfer of cultures or storage in distilled water or mineral oil) to slightly more complex (silica gel crystals) or to technologically sophisticated and expenseive (freeze-drying and cryogenic storage in liquid nitrogen). The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are presented in a manner that facilitates an informed choice of method based on the available technological and financial resources of the laboratory needing to store cultures.
