Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Previously we reported that 12-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid (12-HOA) induced the production of phenazine-1-carboxylic acid PAC) by P. aeruginosa 2HS (Keudell et al., FASEB J. 8(7):A1469, 1994). We report here: (1) P. aeruginosa 2HS and its substrain P. aeruginosa 2HSp resist several antibiotics. Both strains convert oleic acid to threo, 7,10-dihydroxy-8(E)-octadecenoic acid (DHOE) with inconsistent yield from 0.02 to 16%. Strains have tendencies to lose conversion activity, and the yield of DHOE was low. (2) Initial study with strain 2HSp indicated that addition of Ampicillin to the medium stabilized and restored the conversion activity with a consistent yield of 5-8%. (3) Strain 2HSp appears to contain plasmid. The role of the plasmid on the production of DHOE from oleic acid by P. aeruginosa 2HSp is under investigation.
