Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Sections of ribosomal RNA genes were amplified using site specific primers and PCR techniques. rDNA fragments were purified and sequenced using an ABI 373 sequencer. Homologous sequences were aligned using CLUSTALV and were further corrected visually. The data were analyzed using the parsimony program DNAPARS on a Sun-10 workstation. Addition order was jumbled and trees were collected from 25 runs. Strict consensus of the greater than 2300 trees was determined using CONSENSE. Section Wentii should be abandoned because all species assigned to it are phylogenetically related to species in other sections. Section Versicolores is an incoherent assemblage of species that belong in sections Nidulantes, Flavipedes, and Cremei. Section Ornati contains phylogenetically diverse species and must be reconsidered. Sections Aspergillus and Restricti are sister groups and well defined by previous workers with only minor modifications. Section Circumdati contains some species that are phylogenetically related to species in other sections, but a core of species remains as a phylogenetically distinct unit. Other sections also must be revised.
