Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Oxygenated metabolites of unsaturated fatty acids play a variety of important roles in biological systems. We have been investigating the production of value-added chemicals from vegetable oils and their component fatty acids. Recently, we discovered a novel compound, 12,13,17- trihydroxy-9(Z)-octadecenoic acid (THOA) which was produced from linoleic acid by microbial transformation at 25% yield. The newly isolated microbial strain catalyzing this transformation was identified as Clavibacter sp. ALA2. The product was purified by high performance liquid chromatography, and its structure was determined by 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared and mass spectroscopy. Maximum production of THOA was reached after 85 h of reaction. THOA was not further metabolized by strain ALA2. Other than extraction from plant materials and chemical synthesis, this is the first report on 12,13,17-trihydroxy unsaturated fatty acid and its production by microbial transformation. THOA shows antifungal activities.
