Technical Abstract: In this manuscript we address the topic of "risk of transmission of viruses" by: 1) describing the diverse mechanisms by which selected viruses survive and flourish in their animal hosts, and 2) emphasizing the defensive measures that must be taken to impede the spread of disease- causing viruses and reduce their economic impact on our animal populations.
