Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A dynamic or flow-through chamber is designed and studied in the laboratory to tests its applicability for measuring fluxes of volatile organic compounds from soil to the atmosphere. The chamber has a wedge- shaped transition zone at both inlet and outlet. The velocity of flowing air and pressure deficit are measured above the soil surface covered by the echamber. Test data show that both the velocity and pressure deficit are relatively constant everywhere within the chamber, and no stagnant zones are detected in the chamber. The chamber is used in a laboratory mass balance study to measure emission loss of methyl bromide and methylene chloride. The chamber is also used in two field experiments to measure emission of methyl bromide from soil to the atmosphere. Experiments results will be discussed.
