Technical Abstract: This book of abstracts for the Fourth International Veterinary Immunology Symposium highlights the progress of this field over the last three years. Major developments have occurred in our knowledge of the basic immune system of the major livestock and avian species with panels of monoclonal antibodies now available to identify individual cell subsets and cell products such as cytokines. Advances in molecular biology have meant that exquisitely sensitive assays are now available for determining pathogen presence in animal tissues and for assaying cytokine secretion during immune responses. New adjuvants and DNA-based vaccines have meant that a range of alternative vaccine products are rapidly becoming available to prevent diseases in animals. This will help save costs by reducing drug usage and help consumers by decreasing drug residues in our food products. Major advances in understanding the pathology associated with bacterial, parasitic and viral diseases were presented and indicate that for many infections the immune system can be stimulated to make alternative T-helper-1 (Th1) or Th2 type responses. Finally investigations are underway to understand local immune responses, e.g., in the respiratory, mammary and gut tissues, so that new therapies can be targeted to these mucosal immune systems for effective disease responses. ARS funds for this meeting helped support publication of these abstracts.
