Title: PROPOSED USE OF HUFF CURVES FOR HYETOGRAPH CHARACTERIZATION

Technical Abstract: Precipitation amounts from weather generators, and measured 24-hr and storm precipitation totals need to be temporally disaggregated for application with current watershed models that will be used for assessing the effects of global climate changes. Short-time increment hyetographs (of the order of minutes) for a given storm or 24-hr total can occur in an infinite number of ways. Consequently, there is a need to generate representative hyetographs (disaggregation) given precipitation values of much larger time steps (e.g., storm totals, etc.). This paper addresses the potential use of Huff curves to temporally disaggregate such totals. Basic Huff-curve construction, including modifications, is presented as well as proposed use for disaggregation, previous studies with Huff curves, and problems with, and research needs for, Huff-curve development. Huff curves show promise for regionalization of hyetographs and application to global change assessments at the watershed scale.
