Title: IMPACT OF NUTRIENTS TO STREAM WATER QUALITY IN A SOUTHEASTERN COASTAL PLAINWATERSHED

Technical Abstract: Rapid expansion of animal and crop production in the southeastern Coastal Plain region has created potential animal waste and fertilizer contamination problems for surface waters. The impact of nutrients from agricultural production on water quality in a Coastal Plain blackwater stream in Duplin Co., North Carolina, was evaluated by monitoring select stream chemical and physical properties over an 18-month period. Weekly stream grab samples were collected from 13 sites during the local growing season (Mar.-Oct.) and twice a month during the remaining period. Stream discharge at each collection site was calculated from in-stream measurements. Measured water chemical properties included pH, electrical conductivity, suspended solids, water temperature, o-P, NO3-N, NH4-N, dissolved, and total organic carbon. Temporal and spatial nutrient concentrations around and exported from the watershed will be presented.
