Technical Abstract: A stream monitoring study was initiated within a 2050-ha Coastal Plain watershed located in Duplin Co., North Carolina, to assess potential contamination of streams by pesticides. Pest control strategies often require the use of a variety of pesticides as part of the total farming management plan. The stream system was monitored over an 18-mo. period for three separate families of pesticides (triazine, chloroacetamide, and acetanilide fungicide) as well as several pesticide metabolites. Grab samples were collected weekly during the growing season (Mar.-Oct.) and twice a month during the remaining months. Cross-sectional area and stream velocity were also measured at each sampling site during collection. Solid phase extraction techniques were used to isolate and concentrate the compounds of interest. Determination and quantification were achieved using gas chromatographic and high pressure liquid chromatographic techniques. Temporal and spatial pesticide concentrations as well as pesticide exports from the watershed will be presented.
