Technical Abstract: This handout contains a list of general rules of thumb for managing feeder calves subjected to the stresses of marketing and transport, as well as other information that may be helpful to producers in calculating cost estimates, etc. The information is compiled from approximately 150 research studies conducted in 12 states over the past 20 years. The information is presented in an easily readable form to provide cow-calf producers, stocker operators, and cattle feeders information they can use to reduce economic losses caused by marketing/transport stress and bovine respiratory disease in feeder calves. Information on proper nutrition and on management practices such as castration, dehorning, and weaning is included. The information demonstrates that there is no one "best way" to manage stressed feeder calves and that cattle producers must develop flexibility in their management and nutrition programs.
