Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Pressure to reduce hazardous solvent use in traditional procedures for pesticide extraction from water has increased the use of solid phase extraction (SPE) technology. We have expanded the use of SPE disks beyond the procedural techniques previously used. By placing the SPE disks directly into the water in the sample collection bottle and allowing sorption through diffusion, we bypass the laboratory extraction process and reduce costs by eliminating the need for expensive vacuum filtering glassware. We determined atrazine sorption from water as a function of time on two disk sizes during static and dynamic equilibration. Static equilibration with 47 mm disks resulted in sorption of 82% of the atrazine after 52 h; while shaking of the samples resulted in 86% sorption after 20 h. This compares to 94% sample recovery achieved with traditional vacuum filtering extraction. The 25 mm disks demonstrated less sorption capacity. .This research suggests a simpler approach for pesticide extraction from soil water and ground water samples compared to current methods, and may allow for in-field extraction of some pesticides.
