Technical Abstract: Sprout control of processing and fresh market potatoes is essential. The Potato Research Laboratory has conducted special tests to determine if certain naturally occurring compounds found in various plants may be applied to potatoes after harvest to biologically control sprouting during long-term storage as substitutes for CIPC. We developed a mid-scale, multi-chambered storage system (20 lb potatoes/chamber; 216 chambers). We tested a number of natural products for their sprout control capabilities. A patent is being issued for one of our tested compounds and a second is being considered.
