Technical Abstract: Two new genes have been mapped to cattle chromosome 29 using in situ hybridization and tritium labeling: lactate dehydrogenase-A (LDHA) and human insulin-like growth factor-2 (IGF2). These genes had both been assigned to bovine syntenic group U7 and to the short arm of human chromosome 11. We used metaphase spreads from cattle homozygous for the t(1;29) to identify the 29. However, this same syntenic group had recently been assigned to chromosome 25 based on the fluorescent in situ hybridization of two cosmids, BMC3324 and BMC8012. We used these same two cosmids and FISH and obtained signal on the 29 of the t(1;29) chromosomes. We, therefore, suggest that the same chromosome has probably been identified differently in different labs and/or with different banding.
