Interpretive Summary: The AAL-toxin and fumonisins are important plant toxins that are produced by fungi. They are usually found when their fungi are grown on rice or corn. We report that A. alternata produces FB1 as well as AAL-toxin. We also found that AAL-toxin, FB2 and FB3 are present in the fungal materials as well as in culture. This suggests that fumonisins may be important in the pathogenesis of A. alternata on tomatoes. It also suggests that the pathways for synthesis of the fumonisins and AAL-toxin coexist in the same fungi.

Technical Abstract: The fumonisins and AAL-toxin are known to be produced by Fusarium moniliforme and Alternaria alternata when grown on rice. A. alternata produced 3.1 ppm FB1 when grown on PDA as determined by CD-ELISA. The presence of FB2, FB3 and AAL-toxin were demonstrated in spores and mycelia of A. alternata by CF/FAB/MS. This is the first report of AAL-toxin, FB2, and FB3 in spores and mycelia and confirms the presence of FB1 in A. alternata.
