Technical Abstract: Rf2 is one of two complementary nuclear restoration genes of the male-steri T cytoplasm. Transposon tagged alleles of rf2 have been isolated previousl (Schnable and Wise, Genetics, 1994). A 3.4-kb Rf2 fragment containing the Mu1 element was cloned and verified via allelic cross-referencing experiments. A partial Rf2 cDNA obtained from a tassel library exhibits 70 0amino acid sequence homology to aldehyde dehydrogenases. This finding has led to the development of a model to explain the role of Rf2 in fertility restoration. An analysis of an Rf2 genomic clone from B73 has established the presence of at least five introns.
