Interpretive Summary: This manuscript reports research that augments research reported in "Analysis of Vegetated Earth Spillways," Proceedings of Transactions of 10th Annual Conference of The Association of State Dam Safety Officials, 26-29 September 1993. No new research is reported

Technical Abstract: The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has updated its DAMS2 Structure Site Analysis computer program to reflect the evolving technology related to earth (soil and rock) spillway design and analysis. The changes include: 1) incorporation of vegetal retardance (discharge dependent flow resistance) into a water surface profile routine for use in computing the head discharge rating for the spillway, 2) computation of erosionally effective boundary stress for stability design of the exit channel, and 3) evaluation of breach potential using a three phase erosion model. NRCS has tested the new DAMS2 software and is currently utilizing it for spillway design and analysis. Distribution of the new software is targeted for March of 1995. This paper provides an overview of the program changes and their significance to the user
