Title: BOVINE PROTOZOAL ABORTION IN NORTH-EASTERN NSW

Interpretive Summary: Neospora caninum is a recently discovered protozoan parasite of livestock and companion animals. It is a major cause of abortion in cattle in the U.S. Its life cycle and sources of infection are unknown. Scientists at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center and the New South Wales Department of Agriculture in Australia have found that 19% of all abortions in dairy cattle were due to neosporosis. These results will be useful to veterinarians and dairy farmers.

Technical Abstract: Neospora caninum was identified in 19.3% of 500 cases of abortion submitted to the New South Wales Department of Agriculture, Australia. This is the first major survey of neosporosis in cattle in Australia.
