Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an emerging technology for thermochemically converting biomass and waste materials into value-added carbonaceous char called hydrochar. HTC is well suited to manage wet feedstocks streams because pre-drying prior to processing is not required as with gasification and dry pyrolysis processes. Researchers reported multitude of beneficial uses of hydrochar for environmental, agricultural, and industrial applications. In this study, we investigated the effects of different animal manure feedstocks, process temperature and time on hydrochar characteristics and energetics. HTC was investigated using a 1-litter (L) non-stirred T316 stainless steel reactor with an external heater and 0.13-L stainless tubular reactors in a bench furnace. Swine manure and chicken litter were carbonized at two solid contents (20 and 50%), two reaction time periods (4 and 20 hours), and two temperatures (200 and 250 degree Celsius, (oC). The effects of process variables on yields, reactor pressures, proximate characteristics of hydrochars, and the energetics of HTC reactions will be presented at the meeting.
