Publication Type: Abstract Only Publication Acceptance Date: 8/31/2015 Publication Date: N/A Citation: N/A Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: In 2014, 61 countries reported outbreaks of Newcastle disease (ND) in domestic poultry. While there are four well-documented panzootics of ND, a fifth panzootic involving Indonesia, Israel, Pakistan, and at least two other countries appears to be occurring. Despite worldwide vaccination, ND continues to infect both domestic and wild bird species. Of special concern are double crested cormorants and rock pigeons since they are known to carry virulent ND virus strains. Also, of concern are synanthropic bird species, such as sparrows and starlings, known to associate with poultry houses for the readily available food and water supply. Under experimental conditions, commercially available ND virus (NDV) vaccines when given correctly to healthy birds are able to prevent sickness and death after a challenge with a virulent NDV. However, the success is not always repeated in the field. There are many reasons for this discrepancy. The biology and epidemiology of the disease will be reviewed. Information on vaccines to prevent the disease, and molecular assays to detect the virus, will also be covered. |
