Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Cover crops often provide many short- and long-term benefits to cropping systems. Legume cover crops can significantly reduce the N fertilizer requirement of non-legume cash crops that follow. The objectives of this presentation were to: I) educate stakeholders about the potential benefits of cover crops; II) transfer knowledge to stakeholders about factors that influence the N credit from legume cover crops; and III) train stakeholders how to best estimate N credits from legume cover crops. The presentation included research results from: I) the USDA-ARS long-term cropping system trial near Centralia, MO; II) the cover crop survey conducted by SARE and CTIC; III) cover crop trials at the University of Missouri Bradford Farm; and IV) cover crop trials in the literature.
