Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Quality potato varieties are the backbone of a strong potato industry. Variety trials have been used to identify promising new varieties for well over a century. Trials are repeated and information collected over many years in order to confidently identify lines that may be well suited for production at a specific location. Because there are pronounced differences in how lines perform between growing locations, less importance is often attached to information collected from sites outside of the target production area. As a potential improvement to this approach, standardized, multi-location variety trials spanning all major US production regions have been initiated. One such trial is the National Fry Processing Trial. An analysis of data from the NFPT demonstrated clearly that coordinated trials such as the NFPT can be used to rapidly identify superior lines for additional, more detailed tests that target specific production locations.
