Chemical composition and biological activity of essential oils of Dracocephalum heterophyllum and Hyssopus officinalis from Western Himalaya. Natural Product Communications. 10(1):133-138.

Interpretive Summary: This paper describes analysis and biological study of the essential oils from two representatives of the Lamiaceae-family, Dracocephalum heterophyllum and Hyssopus officinalis. Chemical of the essential oils is presented. a total of 44 compounds were identified from H. officinalis oil, accounting for 98.3 % of the total. Where the highest amount of pinocarvon (23.4%) followed by cis-pinocamphone (20.3%), ß-pinene (17.8%) and trans-pinocamphone (5.0%) were obtained. The essential oil of D. heterophyllum contained mainly citronellol (74.2%) with a total of 40 compounds. Only small amounts of cis-rose oxide (2.2%), citronellyl acetate (1.7%) and trans-rose oxide (1.1%) contributed to the oil constituents. The oils possessed biological activity against Staphylococcus aureus, several Colletotrichum species, and toxicity to Aedes aegypti.

Technical Abstract: The essential oils of two representatives of the Lamiaceae-family, Dracocephalum heterophyllum Benth. and Hyssopus officinalis L., are described for their antifungal, antibacterial and larvicidal as well as biting deterrent activities. Additionally, the essential oils’ chemical compositions, analyzed by simultaneous GC-MS and GC-FID, and odor descriptions are given. The main components of the H. officinalis oil were pinocarvon, cis-pinocamphone, and ß-pinene. Citronellol was found as the main compound for D. heterophyllum essential oil. Antibacterial testing by agar dilution assay revealed greater activity of D. heterophyllum against Staphylococcus aureus compared to H. officinalis. It also showed promising antifungal activity against Colletotrichum species and was more toxic against Aedes aegypti larvae in a larvicial bioassay. Both essential oils demonstrated high activity in biting deterrent bioassay.
