Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Dietary Supplement Ingredient Database (DSID) provides analytically-derived estimates of ingredient content in dietary supplement (DS) products sold in the United States. DSID was developed by the Nutrient Data Laboratory (NDL) within the Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in collaboration with the Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other federal agencies. The third release of the DSID (http://dsid.usda.nih.gov) provides, for the first time, estimates of ingredient content and variability in non-prescription prenatal multivitamin/mineral (MVM) and omega-3 fatty acid DS. In addition, the adult and children's MVM data and application files were updated. For the DSID studies, NDL identifies and samples representative supplement products. Samples of each product are sent for analysis of ingredient content to laboratories experienced in performing chemical tests on DS. In order to obtain accurate results, quality assurance and quality control plans are established for each study, with standard reference materials, in-house control materials and product duplicate results assessed before product data are accepted as final. Laboratory data for ingredients are then evaluated by regression analyses weighted by DS market share information, if available. The DSID-3 reports ingredient-based regression equations; research summaries for each DS study; data files containing predicted ingredient amounts in Access, SAS and Excel formats; data files containing codes linking ingredient estimates predicted in DSID to DS label content stored in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data files, in SAS and Excel formats; and online ingredient calculators for the adult, children’s and non-prescription prenatal MVM DS. The DSID-3 provides research tools to assess nutrient intake from DS, which complements the food composition data in the USDA-ARS National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference (SR). The DSID analytical estimates can be used to gauge the accuracy of label-reported ingredient levels in DS. Thus, the DSID provides researchers with data to improve total nutrient intake assessments (from foods and DS) of the U.S. population.
