Interpretive Summary: Cotton fiber is one of the most important agricultural commodities in the world, with over 100 countries involved in export and import of cotton. Over the years, great efforts have been made to improve the traditional measurements and also to develop next-generation tools for better, rapid, comprehensive, and automated systems in fiber quality assessment. The representatives are high volume instrumentation (HVITM) and advanced fiber information system (AFIS) that are being utilized as primary and routine means of acquiring fiber quality indices. As a different and complementary approach, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy technique has been explored extensively for different measurements of cotton fiber qualities. This Chapter outlines the NIR applications in past 10 years.

Technical Abstract: Cotton fiber is one of the most important agricultural commodities in the world. Its production and profitability are determined by at least three main factors including genotype, environment, and production practices that interact to one another and ultimately affects the yield and quality of cotton fiber. Over the years, cotton producers and processors have used conventional techniques and systems such as high volume instrumentation (HVITM) and advanced fiber information system (AFIS) measurements as primary and routine tools of acquiring fiber quality properties in cotton industry. As an innovative and complementary approach, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy technique has been explored extensively from various aspects of cotton fiber qualities, because of its rapid and low-cost attribute that can be used, away from the standard laboratory, in places such as ginning and breeding sites as well as warehouses. This Chapter summarizes these updated developments occurred in past 10 years.
