Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The genome of the A. nomius type strain was sequenced using a personal genome machine. Annotation of the genes was undertaken, followed by gene ontology and an investigation into the number of secondary metabolite clusters. Comparative studies with other Aspergillus species involved shared/unique genes, phylogenomic associations, and the mating-type locus which is integral to sexual recombination. The genome size for A. nomius was found to be approximately 36 Mb and contained 11,918 genes- 8,995 of which were annotated. Based on our phylogenomic and mating-type locus findings, A. nomius may be the progenitor species to the other aflatoxigenic fungi in section Flavi. This manuscript introduces a sequenced genome for a fungus that may soon be revealed as important to aflatoxin research and the evolution of aflatoxigenic fungi.
