Interpretive Summary: Sensation™ ‘Florida127’ strawberry is a new variety from the University of Florida breeding program. It has demonstrated excellent fruit size and eating quality, while also producing high early and total yields in experimental trials for over 5 years. It differs from commercial varieties by consistently having greater soluble solids content (i.e. total sugars).

Technical Abstract: ‘Florida127’ strawberry originated from a 2009 cross between Winterstar™ ‘FL 05-107’ (female parent) and unreleased selection FL 02-58 (male parent). It is a short-day genotype adapted to an annual plasticulture growing system. The plant is upright with open architecture, allowing air movement and easy visualization of the fruit. Its moderate plant size and long pedicels allow the fruit to be easily harvested. In trained taste panels, fruit of 'Florida 127' had higher sweetness ratings than the commercial 'Strawberry Festival' or 'Florida Radiance'. Soluble solids content (SSC) were greater for 'Florida 127' than 'Strawberry Festival' or 'Florida Radiance' four, or six, out of seven harvests, respectively. SSC data were consistent with sensory data. Consumer panels rated 'Florida 127' superior to 'Strawberry Festival' in one panel, with greater sweetness and lower sourness. Other panels did not show preference in comparison with 'Strawberry Festival', but sourness was detected to be lower.
