Technical Abstract: Controlling insect pests is an important consideration for sugarcane farmers seeking to minimize losses and maximize profits. Research in managing insects has been conducted for almost as long as sugarcane has been grown in Louisiana. This presentation reviews Louisiana sugarcane entomology from the early 1890s to the present. It also summarizes the number and types of publications from Louisiana on the sugarcane borer, the most important insect pest of sugarcane in that state. Thoughts on the future of sugarcane entomology in Louisiana are presented with particular concern being expressed for a diminishing professional workforce needed to provide new research on effectively managing damaging infestations of insect pests.
