Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Biochar has gained world attention as a soil amendment to increase carbon sequestration, improve fertility levels and bolster soil water retention. Unfortunately, the amount of biochar needed for field application rates to achieve these results can be in the tons per hectare range. There is concern that industrial biochar production will not be able to keep up with global demand, or especially in regions that have scarcity of feedstocks or have socio-economic concerns.
