Title: The first closed genome sequence of Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis biovar intermedius

Interpretive Summary: Campylobacter fetus is a member of a bacterial group that also contains the established pathogens Campylobacter jejuni and Helicobacter pylori. Campylobacter fetus is currently divided into two groups, Campylobacter fetus fetus and Campylobacter fetus venerealis. C. fetus fetus has been isolated from food animals and multiple food sources and has also been associated with human illness, while C. fetus venerealis is exclusively a veterinary pathogen. A subtype of C. fetus venerealis has been described and termed ‘biovar intermedius’. This subtype can colonize the intestines of cattle as well as the genital tracts. To further understand this organism, the complete DNA sequence of the strain 03/293 chromosome was determined. Genes were identified and compared to those found in other C. fetus strains. An unusual feature of this strain is the presence of multiple mobile DNA elements; many of these elements inserted into genes, thus inactivating them. Although it is unclear from the chromosomal sequence why this particular biovar has an expanded host range, comparison of this chromosomal sequence with that of the related venerealis subsp., when completed, should reveal genes important for disease progression and niche establishment.

Technical Abstract: Campylobacter fetus venerealis biovar intermedius is a variant of Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis, the causative agent of Bovine Genital Campylobacteriosis. In contrast to Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis which is restricted to the genital tract of cattle, Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis biovar intermedius can be isolated from the intestines of cattle as well. We report the first closed whole-genome sequence of this biovar.
