Technical Abstract: Chemical analyses were conducted to determine the qualitative and quantitative differences in terpenoid emissions from avocado trees sharing the same maternal background. The study analyzed the proximo-distal spatial differences from the trunk to the leaves through different branch diameters. Descriptive discriminant analysis found that both genotype and location within the tree could be separated based on their chemical content. Using the chemicals from the leaves, a good separation between two full sibling seedling trees was found, and that the separation was associated with the chemistry of the parental trees. We discuss the results in relation to the discrimination process used by wood-boring insects for site-selection on host trees.
