Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Animal germplasm (semen, eggs, embryos, DNA, tissue) can be preserved from all agricultural species and result in the regeneration of animal lines or breeds. However, there are limitations to successful utilization of the material that are attributed to the type, post-thaw quality, and available assisted reproductive techniques. These limitations are compounded further by species differences which necessitate customization and optimization of diluents, protocols, and techniques. Therefore, the goal of the cryobiology research at NAGP is to better understand the many factors associated with cryopreservation; improve the collection, processing and storage of germplasm; and utilize the germplasm more efficiently and effectively across agricultural species. This approach has enabled the NAGP to improve and develop numerous methods for germplasm evaluation, preservation, and utilization and their application to the national repository. For that reason, this presentation will present and discuss many of the standard assisted reproductive techniques available for use with animals, their strengths and weaknesses, and the potential for improvement and expansion of existing methodologies.
