Technical Abstract: Soil moisture remote sensing requires an accurate assessment of moisture sources at the surface to account for attenuation to the radiometric signal. Vegetation water content is the most signficant store of moisture at the surface for most vegetated surfaces, greater than intercepted precipitation or surface leaf wetness. Visible and near-infrared vegetation indices can provide a good approximation of surface vegetation biomass and water content with careful validation of empirical models per each crop type within the landscape. This research examines a new domain in southern Manitoba, Canada, the site of a new in situ soil moisture and agricultural monitoring network which will seek to understand the relationship between soil moisture and crop yield. Crops in this study include corn and soybeans, as well as winter wheat, canola, and pasture. An intensive six week campaign was conducted in the summer of 2012 to monitor soil moisture and vegetation status. Results of this study are preseneted.
