Technical Abstract: The screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), was a devastating pest to all warm blooded animals in the United States and the rest of North America. Successful eradication of the screwworm was achieved by using the unique approach called the sterile insect technique. Here we will discuss the development and implementation of the program to eradicate screwworms. We will also indicate some of the current and future aspects regarding this highly successful program.
