Technical Abstract: It has been proven that rainbow trout can selectively be improved to more efficiently process and utilize nutrients from different sources. A stock of rainbow trout has been developed to grow faster on a diet formulated without fishmeal and the protein sources coming completely from plant material. However, the specific physiological and metabolic changes that have occurred during selection are only now being determined. The development of an animal model that possesses differential growth and utilization of feed derived from different protein source is a valuable resource for evaluating how fish perceive and differentially utilize nutrients from distinct sources. Our current findings relating to changes in intestinal tolerance, taste tolerance and the regulation of satiation factors will be presented.
