Interpretive Summary: Cattle may contain the bacteria Salmonella that can make people sick. Food production facilities routinely test their products for contamination. This report describes development of a rapid method for testing for the bacteria Salmonella. This rapid testing may allow food production facilities a quicker turn around to test their perishable products.

Technical Abstract: Rapid Salmonella detection is needed to help prevent the distribution of contaminated food products. Using traditional culture methods, Salmonella detection can take up to 3-5 days. Using an improved protocol and a commercial real-time PCR system, we have shortened the detection time to under 24 hours with the same sensitivity as compared to traditional Salmonella culture methods.
