Technical Abstract:
One of the first major goals of the microbiology laboratory is to isolate or detect clinically significant microorganisms from an affected site and, if more than one type of microorganism is present, to isolate them in approximately the same ratio as occurs in vivo. Whether an isolate is “clinically significant” or not depends upon the circumstances of isolation. For example, the isolation of large numbers of a particular microorganism from a normally sterile site in the presence of an inflammatory cytology would be interpreted as significant.
