Technical Abstract:
More robust industrial yeast strains from Kluyveromyces marxianus NRRL Y-1109 and have been produced using UV-C irradiation specifically for anaerobic conversion of lignocellulosic sugar streams to fuel ethanol at elevated temperature (45°C). This type of random mutagenesis offers the possibility of generating large numbers of mutations broadly over the whole genome. When all of the genes were mutagenized to average 80% kill level and selected in sufficient numbers using automated plating strategies, we observed strains with improved utilization of sugars from lignocellulosic feedstocks under anaerobic conditions and at elevated temperatures.
