Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This chapter updates one of the same title from Edition 12 of Stearn’s Introductory Biology published in 2011. It reviews binomial nomenclature, discusses three codes of plant nomenclature (the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants, and the PhyloCode), development of the kingdom concept, reviews the range of species concepts (morphological, interbreeding, ecological, phylogenetic, eclectic, nominalistic species concepts), and discusses the future of plant classification. The major chapter updates include a discussion of new classifications resulting from the Tree of Life Projects, and a discussion of how next generation sequencing is being applied to plant phylogenies and classifications.
