Technical Abstract: With the obesity epidemic showing no signs of abating, there is ongoing interest in altering energy balance (i.e., decreasing energy intake and/or increasing energy expenditure) to promote weight, specifically fat, loss. However, short- and long-term outcomes of, and adherence to, decreasing energy intake are variable, and reports of weight regain are common. There is thus increasing interest, both at the lay public and scientific levels, in lifestyle modifications to promote weight loss in the absence of energy restriction. In this special issue, we present two review papers and three randomized control trials that address such lifestyle modifications.
