Technical Abstract: Alternative nonthermal and thermal food safety interventions are gaining acceptance by the food processing industry and consumers. These technologies include high pressure processing, ultraviolet and pulsed light, ionizing radiation, pulsed and radiofrequency electric fields, cold atmospheric plasma, GRAS antimicrobials, flash pasteurization, and many others. Many of these technologies have been the focus of research at USDA Eastern Regional Research Center. The results of our research, including applications which have been transferred to the food processing industry, will be discussed.
