Technical Abstract: The experiment was established in a field of League-type soil (3% sand, 32% silt, and 64% clay) under organic management for many years at the Texas A&M University system’' Agrilife Research and Extension Center, Beaumont. Twenty rice cultivars and lines were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Plots consisted of six 15-ft rows, and spaced 7 inches between rows. Durana white clove (6 lb/A) was planted on 4 Nov, 2009, and plowed down on 31 Mar, 2010. Plots received 1500 lb/A of organic Nature Safe fertilizer (13-0-0, N-P-K) on 14 Apr. Permanent flood was established on 15 Apr. Rice was water seeded at 180 lb/A on 16 Apr. Plots were irrigated as locally recommended. On 28 Jul, severity of narrow brown leaf spot, bacterial panicle blight, brown spot, and leaf smut were rated on a scale of 0 to 9, where 0 represents no symptoms and 9 represents most severe. All diseases were resulted from natural inoculum. Plots were harvested at the maturity stage of individual cultivars and lines, and grain yield adjusted to 12% grain moisture. Narrow brown leaf spot and brown leaf spot were commonly present in plots while bacterial panicle blight and leaf smut were observed only on some cultivars. Narrow brown leaf spot severity was high on Cocodrie, Cybonnet, Jazzman, Jeff Nil Farm 43, Presidio, RU0703144, RU0703190, and Sierra, and was low or no on all other cultivars or lines. Low levels of bacterial panicle blight were observed on Bengal, Jeff Nil Farm 43, and MCRO2-1572. Brown spot severity was least on GP2, Jeff Nil Farm 43, RU0703144, and Tesanai 2, and was moderate on all other cultivars or lines. There was no or trace leaf smut on all cultivars or lines except Presidio. Tesanai 2, GP2, Rondo, PI 312777, PI338046, and Wells had yields that ranked among the highest.
