Technical Abstract: Synthetic polymers, made almost entirely from chemicals derived from crude oil, are widely used as primary packaging in the food industry causing environmental issues. Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) can be used as bio-based packaging material. In this study, the application of nanotechnology to develop polymer nanocomposites films with the addition of cellulose nanoparticles was approached to improve the mechanical and barrier properties of HPMC films. The composite produced by using whiskers as filling material were transparent, flexible and homogeneous. In comparison with HPMC films, these films exhibited an increase of 22% in tensile strength and 55% in Young’s modulus, Water vapor permeability decreased by 14% while the transparency of the film only decreased 6%.
